Hungry Corbett is dreaming of a new odyssey

Darren Corbett is adamant that he will “steal the show” at the Odyssey Arena on Saturday night.

Corbett returns to the ring after a two-year absence, on the supporting bill to Tyson Fury’s clash with Martin Rogan, against Mayo’s Michael Sweeney believing he can revive a career many thought had long since expired.

Corbett has been sparring with former undefeated British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Fury and is out to show promoter Mick Hennessy he has a future in the ring — and he has no doubt who will come out on top in the main event.

“I have now sparred both Fury and Rogan and I have to say that Fury is the favourite.

“When you think about his boxing ability, height, reach and power, Fury has to be the favourite,” said Corbett, who relished the sparring with Fury despite taking his fair share of lumps.

“I have sparred most of the top heavyweights and cruiserweights in Britain and some in the States and Fury is the best I’ve sparred. He’s 6ft 9’ and he moves so well, he can box and boy can he hit.

“When Fury hits you it’s like a flash — you don’t know whether it’s the power of the shot or you’re lights have gone out.

“It’s all in a moment and then I just went right back at him — I didn’t go down and I didn’t back down.”

Fury confirmed the hot and heavy work-outs with Corbett, saying: “Darren will be back with me for the next training camp.”

Corbett, a former Commonwealth cruiserweight champion, goes into his fight with Sweeney as the underdog but the 39-year-old Belfast man is adamant that he will leave the Odyssey with a brighter future than ever before.

Corbett added: “There’s no way I’m letting Michael Sweeney stand in the way of me getting my career going.

“If I beat him then I want to get in there with British cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli, he couldn’t take my power.

“I’m absolutely buzzing, I’ve been doing circuit training with Gerard McCafferty and I have been training like never before.

“This is a great opportunity for me in front of a big crowd and you know I’m a real crowd pleaser.

“A lot of people can’t wait to see this fight — I’ll steal the show!”
