Canavan rages at Italian boxing team

Published 16/03/2010

Sean Canavan, a member of the Central Council of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association, has slammed the unsporting behaviour of the Italian team against Ireland in Belfast on Sunday night.

Sunday's Ireland versus Italy clash was abandoned with seven bouts remaining after the Italians withdrew their team because they were unhappy with the judging.

The Italians, who were beaten 7-5 by Ireland at the National Stadium in Dublin last Friday, threw in the towel after going 4-1 down at the Donegal Celtic club.

The Azzuri pulled their squad after reigning World lightweight champ Dominico Valentino was beaten 8-4 by former Irish champ David Oliver Joyce.

Canavan said: “We went out of our way to accommodate the Italy team in Belfast and the way they treated the Irish team, the fans and the organisers was despicable and very unsporting. I've been involved in boxing since 1951 and I've never seen behaviour as childish as the way the Italian team behaved on Sunday night.”
