Big fight: Michael Conlan will make his professional debut in New York

Top promoter Bob Arum has confirmed that Michael Conlan will make his professional debut at the Madison Square Garden Theatre on March 17.

It had been mooted for some time that Arum's Top Rank company would give Conlan a launching pad in New York and now the Belfast man will take to the 5,000-seater stage where John Duddy enjoyed many atmospheric nights.

"Thousands of people are going to be flying in from Ireland to New York to watch it," said Arum.

"It's going to be an unbelievable event. I think Michael is going to be a major star in the order of a Barry McGuigan."

Conlan, like Arum, is expecting the Irish-American community to get right behind the World amateur champion, who will campaign at super-bantamweight.

"Most of the fights will be in the States around Boston and Chicago and New York, and it is going to be fantastic with the Irish ex-pat community," said Conlan.

"There's no fans like the Irish fans, that's the truth."
