Cricket: Bannsiders and Brigade hoping for no more cup slip-ups
North West Senior Cup
After exiting the Irish Cup, from winning positions last week, Brigade and Coleraine will be more determined than most not to make the same mistake again in the quarter-finals of the Northern Bank Senior Cup.
Brigade crashed out of the all-Ireland competition in sensational fashion last week when they failed to defend 245 in 30 overs against holders Waringstown, but they will expect a more straightforward game when they travel across the border to visit St Johnston.
Brigade did get back to winning ways with a convincing 99-run victory against Creevedonnell during the week.
Coleraine were 28 runs from victory with six wickets left against Donemana last Saturday but they contrived to lose them all for just 17 runs and it is likely to be just as difficult when Limavady visit Sandel Lodge.
It is a double header of cup action this weekend with the ClubTurf Ulster Cup on Sunday and the North West teams have much to prove here, having produced only one finalist in the last three years.
They have only three of the quarter-finalists this year although two of them are at home, Brigade with an instant chance of revenge against Waringstown and Donemana face holders Instonians.
Bready reached the final of the Tyrone section of the Faughan Valley Cup with a seven wickets wickets victory over Fox Lodge, but Strabane refused to finish the other semi, also played in heavy rain, against the umpires’ wishes. That result is likely to be determined in the committee room.
Scores: Strabane 61 (14.5 overs, Jnr McBrine 3-9, J McGonigle 3-11, A McBrine 2-4); Donemana 44-1 (6 overs, K Sajjid 28 not out). Abandoned.
Fox Lodge 141-6 (Wajihuddin 51; M Fleming 2-27) Bready 142-3 (18.3 overs, D Rankin 60 not out). Bready won by seven wickets.
