Big-hitter Obus makes North West debut

Waringstown's Obus Pienaar captures imagination
Waringstown's Obus Pienaar captures imagination

Pick of the five Irish Cup games in the North West today is unbeaten Coleraine's clash with Merrion, last year's beaten finalists, but the biggest crowd could be found at the smallest ground.

Bonds Glen made their debut in the competition just two years ago and have already hosted Leinster, the 2009 holders and, last year, CIYMS who would go on to win the NCU league title. But it is one player rather than the team which will capture the imagination with big-hitting Obus Pienaar part of the Waringstown side which visits the Co Tyrone club for the first round clash.

It will be the South African's first visit to the North West because in his previous season with Waringstown, the only game on their way to winning the trophy in 2011 that was played north of the Lawn was at Beechgrove in the semi-final and by then, Pienaar had left.
