O’Brien facing six weeks on sidelines

Niall O’Brien will be out of action for up to six weeks after a second MRI scan revealed two Grade 2 ligament tears in his right ankle.
The Ireland and Northamptonshire wicket-keeper injured his ankle during the World Twenty 20 victory against Bangladesh and aggravated it in the Super Eight game against Sri Lanka.
With O’Brien still feeling pain this week, he was ruled out of his county’s Twenty20 Cup game on Tuesday and sent for another scan which revealed the true extent of the damage.
O’Brien is out of next weekend’s Intercontinental Cup game against Kenya which will now be played at Eglinton, as none of the proposed Dublin venues can take the match. The three ODIs against Kenya on July 9, 11 and 12 will still go ahead at Clontarf.
He remains on course to face England at Stormont on Thursday August 27.
Meanwhile, Ireland A coach Adrian Birrell was still backing his side to win their three-day game against a Yorkshire Select at Weetwood College, Leeds, despite having to follow-on yesterday.
Nigel Jones’ side was dismissed for 168, just half of the home side’s first day total with only Andrew Poynter impressing with the bat and Gary Kidd, unbeaten at the end, showing up the so-called better batsmen.
