Dunbarton stunned by a Falls onslaught

By Luke Hope

Falls turned back the clock by claiming a sensational IBA Senior Cup win over Dunbarton at Fruithill Park in Belfast on Saturday.

The club, once a dominant force not only in the Private Greens League but in Irish bowls, breathed new life into their flagging season with a shock 28 shots victory

A massive 28-and-a-half points may currently separate the teams in the PGL Division One table, but high-flying Dunbarton were simply no match for the basement side on a day they'll remember for quite some time.

Incredibly, Falls have yet to clock up their first win since their promotion to the top flight this season. However, their early relegation fears will be eased considerably if this performance is anything to go by.

They have a rich history in the game's top knockout tournament, having written their own little chapter in the record books by lifting the coveted piece of silverware on five occasions over a six year period, back in 1964-1969.

Overall, they have paraded the trophy 11 times, the last back in 1984.

They'll obviously not be short in confidence when they travel to face NIBA Division One side Banbridge in a third round clash on Saturday, June 17.

"It was a fantastic effort by the team," said Falls' Michael McCafferty. "Hopefully, this result can help kick-start our season.

"We've struggled in the league so far, but we can take a great deal of confidence from this - it shows what we are capable of."

McCafferty turned in a stunning performance, skipping his rink to a whopping 30-10 win against Marty Trainor.

Paul McEwan, Michael Morgan and Mark Leckey also made a significant contribution with wins against DJ Wilson (21-18), Conor McCartan (17-14) and Myles Greenfield (23-21).

It's certainly a long time since the Gilford boys lost on all four rinks in any competition!
