Foxes out to lay trap for Leinster

By Ian Callender

When the third round draw for the Bob Kerr Irish Cup was made last month, holders Leinster were probably rubbing their hands in anticipation of a straightforward passage into the last eight.

They were drawn against Fox Lodge, the team they had defeated by 151 runs in a game which started their run to final glory last year.

Tomorrow’s clash at Ballymagorry, however, promises to be much tougher than expected because of the Foxes impressive start to the league season.

Indeed, after six matches, Brian Allen’s side are looking down on all their rivals with four straight wins.

Their only reversal, in their second match, was to Brigade at Beechgrove and that by only 19 runs, chasing 263, so confidence will be high in the camp that Fox Lodge can reach the Irish Cup quarter finals for the first time since their golden run to the semi final in 1999.

The North West is hogging the limelight tomorrow for Ulster action in the cup. While the NCU drew a blank in the draw, three are three attractive games with Coleraine hosting defending joint NCU league champions Instonians and Glendermott hoping for another runs feast against CSN.

The match-of-the-day, however, is probably at Balrothery where North County, winners of the trophy five times in the last 10 years, host a Limavady side whose all-conquering run was ended at Donemana last weekend.

The Roesiders have not won the cup since 2004 and, their last four exits have all been in Dublin.

Limavady are also in league action on Sunday and the winners of their game at Glendermott will join Fox Lodge at the top of the table while today, St Johnston and Eglinton make their sixth attempt to get off the mark in the only Senior One games against Donemana and Strabane respectively.

Tomorrow’s fixtures: Bob Kerr Irish Senior Cup third round (12.30): Coleraine v Instonians, Fox Lodge v Leinster, Glendermott v Civil Service North (12.00), North County v Limavady, The Hills v Pembroke, Railway Union v YMCA.

Henderson Properties Senior League One (1.00): Donemana v St Johnston, Eglinton v Strabane. Tomorrow: Glendermott v Limavady.
