Short Passes: Ian Hughes

Ian Hughes

Name : Ian Hughes (brother of former Northern Ireland football captain Aaron) Age : 25 Club : Cookstown

Most memorable match: 2011 Irish Senior Cup final. We had been beaten in the 2009 final by Pembroke and we finally got our hands on an Irish trophy after 23 years. It was a special day for everyone involved with the club and one to remember forever. We came out 4-3 winners which meant we secured a spot in the EHL which was a dream for everyone in the squad.

Favourite venue: Rotterdam HC, its the perfect place to play hockey! They have several pitches to cater for their 20+ teams. Their main pitch is surrounded by stands and the clubhouse overlooks everything. Dragons HC in Belgium is a close second.

Toughest Opponent: From Irish hockey I’d say Eugene Magee, formerly from Banbridge, as he has everything. He’s got the pace and skill to beat anyone, can score on forehand and reverse and has now developed a drag flick. “Geeno” had a knack of always scoring against me, so he’s the guy I hated to play against.

Sporting Hero: Phil Jackson (coach of Chicago Bulls and LA Lakers, 11 times NBA champion as head coach) more for his days as a coach than as a player, he was able to get the best out of every player on his team.

Best thing about hockey: I have travelled to eight European countries, played in the top level of club hockey and met hundreds of friends all because of the game of hockey.

Sporting event I would like to attend: Apart from the 2012 Olympic hockey finals, I would love to see a NBA finals game.
