Ireland Wolves show hunger in victory over Bristol students
Ireland Wolves made a winning start to their short tour in England with a 27 runs victory over Bristol University.
YMCA all-rounder Simmi Singh top scored with 62 and shared a fifth wicket stand of 83 with skipper Shane Getkate, whose 45 came off 50 balls with five fours and a six. Robert McKinley finished the innings in style with a run-a-ball 32 not out, although the Wolves were still bowled out with 13 balls unused for 261.
Two early wickets from Tyrone Kane and impressive run outs by James Shannon and Adam Dennison reduced the students to 33 for four in the 13th over, but a stand of 105 in 18 overs held up the Irish side until Dennison's under-used off spin took two quick wickets and two more from Singh proved enough to check Bristol's late charge.
The Wolves play Gloucestershire II in a 50 overs game today.
The NCU action gets under way this weekend with a two-day Twenty20 tournament at The Green and Stormont.
Tomorrow, North Down will host Lisburn (10am) and Bready (1.15pm) with the visiting clubs meeting at 4.30pm, while Civil Service North will play Carrickfergus (10am) with Glasgow side Weirs playing Carrick (1.15pm) and CSN (4.30pm).
The runners-up in each group will play each other at Stormont on Sunday (11am) at the same time as the third placed teams meet at The Green, with the final scheduled for 2pm at Comber.
