Irish dreaming of Super Eight joy
Ireland have never reached the Super Eight stages of the U19 World Cup and this year, in a group with the 2008 beaten finalists South Africa and the mighty Australia, there is little likelihood of them breaking that duck at the sixth attempt.
However, as this year’s squad headed from New Zealand’s South Island to Queenstown, there was no hint of the underdog as they faced the most exciting of challenges.
Only a late-order batting collapse in the final warm-up game against West Indies on Tuesday, deprived them of a first Test scalp but coach Matt Dwyer was determined to take the positives from that match into tonight’s opening World Cup clash against South Africa.
Ireland meet the Aussies on Sunday before completing their group stages on Tuesday against the United States.
