Jason Harvey races through to semi-finals at the European U23 Athletics Championships

ATHLETICS: Belfast's Jason Harvey qualified in style for today's semi-finals of the 400m hurdles at the European U23 Athletics Championships in Finland.

The 21-year-old ran a strong race to finish second in his first round heat in a time of 50.65 secs yesterday.

It was Harvey's second fastest ever time and only a fraction slower than his recent personal best of 50.27.

The race was won by Serbia's Emir Bekric in 50.48, with Harvey seventh fastest overall of the 31 competitors.

In the 800m, Letterkenny's Mark English finished third in his heat in 1 min 49.65 secs but only the first two qualified for the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, in the World Youth Championships in the Ukraine, Finn Valley's Fellan McGuigan had a PB of 68.94m in the hammer but it wasn't enough for a place in the final.
