Jingle all the way for David

By Robert Fenton

The Christmas bells rang out for Belfast's David O'Neill who went home £400 richer after his Ferneys Screed won the Sleighbells 550 final at Drumbo Park on Saturday night.

A good winner of his semi-final, the white and black dog did even better in the decider, stopping the watch at 30.26. The four-year-old loves this track and was registering his 10th victory.

Hitting the ground running in the blue sheet, every post was a winning one as he led out and down the far side from the 6/4 favourite Kingsmill Aguero who tried in vain to get to the leader.

There were two other notable performances on the night, the best of which was a sensational run over 525 by the pup Pinkandytownpunk. Competing in a modest 525 (A5) - only his third outing - he blitzed the opposition by 10 lengths, clocking a sensational 28.68 seconds which hikes the Francis McCullough-owned Belfast pup up five grades into open class.

Earlier, Make It Pay made a fetching debut in a sprint for Lisburn trainer Jason Atcheson. The dark brindle's litter brother won the previous evening and the Drumcrow Obama progeny, are more than useful.

There will no more Drumbo racing in 2014 and no trials today and tomorrow. The stadium will reopen on Monday, December 29 for trials with racing resuming on January 2 and 3.
