Castlewellan open up the doors to new era

The Castlewellan Under-21 side chalked up their own little bit of history when they became the first line-up from the club to host a game on their new playing complex.

The new pitch, on the Dublin Road, is a welcome addition to the Castlewellan club's existing amenities.

Club chairman Micheal Crilly, delighted to hail the new facility, maintains that more matches in various codes can now be played which should ensure the completion of fixture programmes.

"We are certainly very happy to have the new pitch in use. We have a large number of teams embracing different codes and we have to try and cater for them," points out the chairman.

Castlewellan Under-21 captain Kevin Duffin led his side out for the first game against Drumaness with Bright official Oliver Burke in charge.

"Our under-age sides deserve the best and we feel we have provided this," adds chairman Crilly.

The 8.5-acre site was purchased by the club in 2002 and the sand-based playing pitch measuring 140m x 90m was completed last month.

The work included ground levelling, drainage, a retaining wall at the Dublin Road end of the pitch and ball-stop high fencing at both ends of the pitch.

The club will now turn its attention to providing a 110m x 70m training and juvenile playing pitch with floodlights and it is hoped that the new floodlight training pitch will be completed by September 2008 - subject to members approval at the club's AGM next month.
