GAA: Canavan's nephews shoot to the four in medals bonanza

Peter Canavan may have stood down from the inter-county scene but it would seem that his family involvement within the higher echelons of gaelic football may be about to continue.

At the week-end, no fewer than four of Peter's nephews collected championship medals at Minor level and in the process they rapped out a message that they could yet follow in the footsteps of their famous uncle.

While Darren Canavan, Peter Campbell and Conor Quinlivan all won Minor championship medals with Errigal Ciaran - they beat Pomeroy in the decider - Eoin McCusker collected his silverware as part of the Dromore squad that overcame Coalisland in the Tyrone senior championship final.

Darren's father Stephen also played for Tyrone.

The Canavan connection certainly played a big part in bringing Errigal Ciaran to the fore again.

Last year the Peter Canavan collected his sixth senior county championship medal when he captained the side to glory.

He was a spectator at Healy Park, Omagh on Sunday to see the younger members of the Canavan clan serve notice that they are set to carry on a fine tradition.

Peter Campbell, Conor Quinlivan and Eoin McCusker all are sons of Peter's sisters and their respective mums are their biggest supporters.

"The whole Canavan family are making a tremendous contribution to GAA in Tyrone. The manner in which these younger players are coming through now suggests that they could follow in Peter's footsteps," says Tyrone PRO Brendan Harkin.
