GAA: Niall and Tiernan reignite St Pat's

Two players with rather familiar surnames are currently playing important roles in helping St Patrick's Academy, Dungannon to try and regain the Ulster Colleges MacRory Cup.

Tiernan O'Hagan and Niall McKenna are sons of Damien O'Hagan and Eugene McKenna, both of whom rendered outstanding service to Tyrone for many years.

When the Academy beat Abbey CBS Newry recently, it was Tiernan who grabbed an important goal, while Niall, a talented midfielder, chipped in with three points from play as the Tyrone outfit underscored their determination to regain the trophy.

It's exactly ten years since the Dungannon school won the All Ireland Colleges Hogan Cup and since then, while they have occasionally flirted with success, they have largely played second fiddle to that other thriving Red Hands football nursery, Omagh CBS, who strode the All Ireland colleges stage in the grand manner.

While Tiernan and Niall are to the fore with their school team, they have already made a substantial impact at club level as well.

Tiernan was in the Coalisland side that were beaten by Dromore in the Tyrone senior football championship final - the 'Island side contained a plethora of teenagers, incidentally - while Niall is underpinning the Augher midfield in some style.

As St Patrick's Academy step up their efforts to sample another slice of colleges glory, the pair will continue to have key roles in a team that looks as if it could go places this season.
