Ruthless Red Hands are the pride of Ulster once again

THERE is just no stopping Tyrone when it comes to winning Ulster Vocational Schools honours.

The Red Hand county have come up trumps again, landing the provincial title by defeating Cavan by 2-15 to 1-11.

And on the evidence of this display, Tyrone could well make a big impact in the All Ireland series. Provincial officials certainly believe that Tyrone have the ammunition to progress and their consistency to date this year has been the most potent weapon in their arsenal

Pat King, one of the driving forces behind the Vocational Schools sector, says: "Tyrone obviously are setting the benchmark and they will now fancy their chances in the All Ireland sector."

The Red Hands were out of the blocks quickly against Cavan and with the wind at their backs they established a six-point lead thanks to scores from Martin Rodgers, Kyle Coney and Patrick McNeice. Rory Dunne eventually opened Cavan's account but on the stroke of half-time Paul McAleer fired into their net as Tyrone led 1-10 to 0-5. Conor Smith got Cavan up and running with a point in the second half and it took a goal line clearance from Gareth Corey to prevent Adrian Cole from getting a major for the Breffni lads. Smith and McAleer exchanged points before the latter got his second goal to keep Tyrone in the driving seat.

Cavan weren't finished yet, though, and a Smith goal was followed by two points from Eugene Keating to leave it 2-11 to 1-10 with 10 minutes left on the clock.

Tyrone weren't to be denied, though, with the superb McAleer tagging on another point and Jamie Donnelly getting in on the scoring act as they qualified for an All Ireland semi final meeting with Munster champions Cork.
