Shooting: Juniors on target to hit gold at international

The Northern Ireland Rifle junior squad, together with their coach Derek Mackie have returned home after a terrific display at the 15th International Smallbore Shooting Match.



The team travelled to the National Shooting Centre at Bisley, Surrey and arrived back in the province with the gold medal after a stunning performance.



The Northern Ireland Junior Squad had a resounding victory when they won the 50 metre Prone Match with the Scottish Squad taking second place and South Africa third.

The Northern Ireland squad is made up of Matthew Hall (East Antrim Rifle & Pistol Club) and Benjamin Chamberlain and Moore Gilpin both from Comber Rifle Club.

Matthew also claimed the silver medal as the second highest scoring individual.



They were taking on the best in the world with teams entered from the USA, Germany, Denmark, South Africa, Great Britain, the Republic and Northern Ireland.

Shooting was conducted under the International Shooting Sports Federation rules, identical to those which govern Olympic and Commonwealth games disciplines.



"This was a truly magnificent achievement against such stiff opposition and our congratulations go to Matthew, Benjamin and Moore with our best wishes for continued successes as their shooting career progresses," said Tom McKay, press officer of the Ulster Counties Smallbore Shooters Union.

The scores were: Matthew Hall 581 x 600, Benjamin Chamberlain 579 x 600, Moore Gilpin 571 x 600.
