Surfing: On crest of a wave

Superstar Shauna causes a sensational splash in Sligo

University of Ulster Student Shauna Ward is riding a wave of success as she has picked up two Irish Surf titles.

The Donegal surfer claimed victory in the Saltrock Co Sligo Open and the SIRF charity competition, both at Strandhill in Co Sligo.

The women's event at the Sligo Open came down to a close battle between two of the superstars of women's surfing - Easkey Britton and Shauna Ward, both UU students.

Easkey is three-times Irish National Surf champion, British Professional Surf Association Tour champion and Irish Intervarsity champion.

Shauna finished second in the intervarsity competition but at Strandhill the Design and Communications student emerged victorious over Easkey.

"It's great taking part in these events and it's nice getting the chance to compete against surfers from different part of the country and from the UK as well," Shauna said.

"The first competition the waves were really excellent - about six to eight feet, and they were quite dangerous, so the competition was postponed for a day.

"And during the charity competition they were a bit smaller - only about three feet."

Shauna is now preparing for the British Professional Surfing Association (BPSA) Portrush Open which takes place the last weekend in October (27-28).
