Marty McHugh on course for record five-timer in singles

By David mason

Whitehead's Marty McHugh admits he is relishing the prospect of appearing in another NIBA singles semi final!

The big Ireland international will be on a double mission in the 2013 Championships at Carrickfergus at the end of the month, having also negotiated his way to the last four in the pairs.

McHugh, the only player to win the singles trophy on four successive occasions, will again team up with Barry Browne in the pairs – the only combination to have won the title a staggering five times.

"It's great to be back in the semi finals," he said. "I wasn't involved last season because I moved to Ballymena, so it makes it a little bit extra special.

"I've played a heck of a lot of games to get here, so I'll be giving it my best shot.

"But nothing can be taken for granted. Everyone is here on merit, there will be no easy games.

"You just have to take one match at a time and hope for a little bit of luck."

McHugh will line out against Dromore's Gavin Glinghan in the singles semi final on Monday, July 29 with the winner to face either Portadown's Aidan Corrigan or Lisnagarvey's Philip Cromie in the decider.

Corrigan also has aspirations of a double celebration because he will contest the pairs semi final. He joins up with Mark Sproule for the showdown against McHugh and Browne, scheduled for Wednesday, July 31.
