Meli determined to take the next step towards a British title shot

By Steve Wellings

Belfast's Alfredo Meli will aim to give his career some momentum as he looks to kick on towards a British title shot this year.

Meli leads the Ulster interest at the Devenish Complex tonight as he tackles Laszlo Fazekas over six rounds.

Meli won 11 straight bouts before boxing to a draw with fellow prospect Conrad Cummings at the Waterfront in 2015. He then spent a year out of the ring before signing with Matthew Macklin's MTK Global outfit and scored a recent comeback win over Anthony Fox.

A scheduled Commonwealth title eliminator with Sheffield's Sam Sheedy was cancelled last April when Meli endured complications around a brain scan. With that now resolved, the 26-year-old has resumed his career in full health.

Meli, who still works as a motor mechanic, said: "Full-time boxing doesn't suit me. Work still needs to be done. Hopefully I will (get a title shot). Hopefully by the end of the year I will get my chance."

Elsewhere on the bill, Derry featherweight Tyrone McCullagh faces Michael Barnor, Ciaran McVarnock returns to Belfast to box Antonio Horvatic and Anto Upton takes on Zaurs Sadihovs.
