Newly crowned champion Michael McKillop goes for double joy at World Championships in Lyon

ATHLETICS: Newly crowned IPC Athletics 800 metres champion Michael McKillop will today go for a double victory over 1,500 metres in the World Championships in Lyon.

All the predictions are that barring illness or injury he will once again be hot favourite to retain the title which he won in Christchurch in 2011.

The 23 year old Glengormley man is presently in the form of his life following his world record victory over the 800 metres distance in France at the weekend. Today he will line up in the T38 category for athletes with mild cerebal palsy causing a slight running imbalance.

Ireland's fastest sprinter Jason Smyth will also be in action today in the semi -finals of the 100 metres for T13 visually impaired athletes. Smyth's main opposition includes Nambala Johannes of Namibia who took silver in the 200.
