Private Greens beat the odds in a league of their own
The Private Greens League defied the odds to recapture the IBA Under-25 Championship at Belmont over the weekend. They produced a flawless performance, pocketing 18 and a half points of the 21 points on offer to pick up the title for the sixth time.
"It was an excellent two days for the boys," said PGL official Robin Horner. "We had a great start on Friday night by beating the holders and grew in confidence."
The 91-76, six points victory certainly was the springboard to the success, with rinks wins for Alistair Coleman, Terry Crawford and Robert Kirkwood.
But the PGL were then pushed to the wire by a battling Bowling League of Ireland in their next outing. Although they eventually crossed the finish line by 14 shots, the Dubliners managed to prise away one and a half points.
The NIBA remained in the hunt by beating the Provincials, which set up a winner-takes-all final outing against the PGL in the afternoon session.
But the Private Greens kids had it all their own way with a fantastic 108-57 success, pocketing all seven points to guarantee the crown they last won in 2012.
Meanwhile, Pickie's Ryan Cavan turned in a splendid performance at Kincora Avenue yesterday to win the Belmont Bowls Club's City of Belfast singles title.
Cavan defeated his Ireland Under-25 team-mate Terry Crawford, from the host club, in an epic final, winning 21-16.
