Prolific Johnny makes it a Winter wonderland with superb display

Rod and Line

By Vic Thomas

Johnny Keith came out on top in the penultimate match of the East Belfast Coarse Angling Club Winter League on the Lower Bann at Portglenone.

Water levels lapped the lower stands for the first time this year and it was also very windy but not too cold.

With the high water and full flow the tip men at last had their day for the first time since the first few matches in the League.

Johnny Keith had a storming last hour. When most catch rates had slowed down, Johnny continued to put fish in his net on Peg 45 to end up with around 60 fish for a winning weight of 7.180Kgs.

Second weight came from the top end of the match length where Jeff Walker on Peg 88 caught 63 slightly smaller fish for 6.550Kgs.

Third was Robert Buick on Peg 44 with 53 fish for 5.950Kgs; fourth, Gary Cummings on end Peg 89, 5.800Kgs; and fifth John Taggart on Peg 87 with 5.450Kgs.

John heads the field going into the final match with a best eight match score of 35pts, 63.140Kgs ahead of second placed Derek Buckley on 38pts, 58.920Kgs.

Third is Paul Hutchman with 44pts, 51.590Kgs; fourth, Robert Buick, 45pts, 49.280Kgs; and fifth Jeff Walker, 46pts, 49.610Kgs.

Lurgan Coarse Angling Club members fished a match on Yellow Island, Lough Muckno where, despite the recent bad weather, the lough fished surprisingly well.

Jim McAllister landed the top weight of the day, 4.675Kgs, which included a nice bream of two kilos. Johnny McKinley finished second with 3.450Kgs and third was Paul Heaney with 2.675Kgs.

Erne Anglers AC AGM will take place in Carrybridge Lakeside Lodge on Monday, March 13 (8pm).

Apart from the usual minutes and matters arising, items to be discussed include Winter Leagues, Private Water Bailiffs Update, International Teams and New Fishery Developments. All members are asked to attend.
