Reynolds hits NI qualifying mark

By Brian Hill

North Down's Ben Reynolds became the latest NI athlete to qualify for next year's Commonwealth Games in Brisbane when he easily beat the required high hurdles time of 13.80 secs at a meeting in Aarhus, Denmark.

The 26-year-old Holywood man won his heat in a time of 13.60secs. Reynolds then went on to win the final in 13.67 secs.

Leon Reid was also in excellent form when he finished second in his 100 metres event in a PB of 10.33 secs.

In the Derry City Marathon field local favourite Catherine Whoriskey led from start to finish. She crossed the line in a time of 2 hrs 50 mins 38 secs, well ahead of Tullamore's Pauline Curley (2.53.09).

As predicted Kenyan athletes dominated the men's race. Freddy Sittuk simply could not cover a break at 22 miles Dan Tanui. At the finish a fresh Tanui was timed at 2 hrs 25 mins 26 secs with Sittuk having to settle for second in 2.26.14. Anthony Constantine was the first local finisher with 2.40.51.
