Promoter Frank Warren is lining up Martin Rogan for a shot at the European heavyweight title at the Odyssey Arena at the end of May.
Rogan pulled off an amazing upset victory when he stopped Matt Skelton to win the Commonwealth heavyweight title at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham on Saturday night.
But Warren was furious that Skelton refused to put his European title on the line and now the EBU belt is vacant because of Rogan’s thrilling victory.
Consequently, Warren and the British Boxing Board of Control are to lobby the EBU to make Rogan the number one challenger.
Warren said: “Martin should be Commonwealth and European champion but Matt didn’t want to defend the European title and I don‘t know why. Now Matt has lost that title and we’ll do everything to get Martin the European title fight. There’s no doubt he should be fighting for it automatically and we’ll look to do that fight in Belfast. That’s a guarantee.”
Rogan said: “It’s amazing and sometimes it is hard to take in just how I’ve come but the sky’s the limit.”
