Sam and Chloe make history with bronze at Euro champs

By Robert Jones

Donegal brother and sister pair Sam and Chloe Magee have won Ireland's first ever European Badminton Championship medal in Denmark.

The Magees beat Polish pair Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Zieba in their mixed doubles quarter-final to guarantee themselves at least a bronze.

The Irish duo clinched a 22-20, 17-21, 21-12 win in Kolding.

Chloe Magee became the first Irish woman to win an Olympic Games match in 2008 in Beijing.

She also went on to compete at the 2012 and 2016 Games in London and Rio while Sam and another Magee brother Joshua won a men's doubles bronze medal at the inaugural 2015 European Games in Baku.

Kirsty Gilmour beat fourth seed Line Kjaersfeldt to guarantee a medal by reaching the semi-finals.

Dane Kjaersfeldt enjoyed home backing in Kolding but Hamilton's Gilmour, seeded seventh, prevailed 21-9 21-17.

Gilmour's victory means the Scot will secure at least a bronze medal to add to the silver she won last year.
