Spirited Ballymoney miss out on final again

By Alex Mills

Ballymoney's semi-final curse struck once again at Randalstown on Saturday as they were dumped out of the Irish Cup by Ballymena.

Having reached the last four five times in the last seven years, the Provincial team could be forgiven for thinking this was their year. They have reserved some impressive performances for the top knockout prize and approached the game at the home of Old Bleach brimming with confidence.

Although Ballymoney turned in a spirited performance, it wasn't enough to stop them from skidding out of the tournament yet again. The experienced Ballymena side produced the big shots when it mattered which earned them a final shoot out against NIBA side Bangor later this month.

"We knew it would be a tough game, and that's just what it was," said Ballymena's Jim Baker. "It was a relief to get through.

"We can now look forward to another final, but we have some important league games coming up before that."

The Sky Blues' title hopes received a dent with a home defeat by Old Bleach last week, handing the initiative to leaders Dunbarton.
