Stith in sparkles as resilient Star get back on track

By David Kelly

American Dillon Stith gave a sublime performance last night as Belfast Star won 82-69 away to KUBS in Dublin in the All-Ireland Premier League.

After the bitter disappointment of losing at home to Eanna last week when throwing away a 10-point lead, this was exactly the response that coach Darren O'Neill had hoped for.

Stith (right) has made a huge difference to Star since arriving a third of the way into the season and against the Dubliners he finished with a staggering 42 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and five blocks.

While Stith was delivering the goods at one end of the court, Star's defence was once again sparkling and captain Keelan Cairns played a crucial role.

But the class of Stith was the obvious difference between the sides and the Dubliners were left reeling every time the American had the ball.

While Stith stood out, Fergal Toner had arguably his best game of the campaign so far as he finished on 19 points as well as playing solid defence.

Indeed, as the KUBS tried to find a way back into the game in the fourth quarter, Toner came up with a superb three-pointer to maintain Star's healthy lead.

It was only the Belfast side's third victory of the season but the second in three weeks and coach O'Neill will now be hoping they can continue to deliver such a balanced performance.

Star return to action in 10 days' time.
