Swail is top dog in Ulster

Published 17/02/2009

Joe Swail has beaten fellow Ulsterman Mark Allen 5-3 in the first round of the Welsh Open at the Newport Centre.

The players were tied at 2-2 at the interval and Allen took the next to lead 3-2 but Swail won the next three frames to secure victory.

Allen twice missed the final black in the decisive eighth frame.

Swail will now play the winner of the match between Stephen Hendry and Martin Gould on Wednesday evening.

World number two Stephen Maguire was the first player through to the second round of the Welsh Open after a 5-0 demolition of local boy Ian Preece at the Newport Centre.
