Coalter at the double to book last eight spot

Young star: Chris Madden-McKee triumphed in the Under-16s

EMMA Coalter enjoyed a double success at the Clubworld Ulster junior open yesterday at Belfast Boat Club.

The Lurgan girl kicked off her under-14 campaign with a tough 6-4 7-6 victory over Eimear Smyth and then returned an hour later for her second match against Mary Parkash which also prove to be an entertaining clash.

Coalter (13) once again edged a tie-break, this time in the opening set, before going on to win the match 7-6 6-3. That booked Coalter's place in the quarter-finals where she will play number two seed Amy Rothwell of Bangor.

Peter Corrie, favourite for the boys under-14s, also walked away with two singles victories and his second one impressed the most when he defeated the number two seed Conor Reilly in the under-16 pre-lims.

Corrie, who is with the AGP tennis set-up, had earlier defeated Matthew Morris in the under-14s 6-2 6-2 and then returned to defeat Reilly after a marathon clash lasting over two hours.

Reilly took the first 6-4 before Corrie edged the second 6-3 and that set up a rollercoaster third which the underdog edged 7-6.

It proved to be a successful day for the AGP boys as Chris Cree defeated James Smith in the under-16s 6-2 6-1, while in the under-18s Chris Madden-McKee defeated Ardghal Macmahon 6-4 6-4 and in the same category David Weir won the all-Bangor clash with Ryan Warwick 6-3 3-6 6-1.

Another long encounter saw Enniskillen's Jared Monaghan edge his under-16 clash with Dylan Robinson, 7-5 6-7 6-4 after two hours 43 minutes. Also in the under-16s, number five seed Neil Jones found himself pushed all the way by Windsor's Leon Gibson, eventually winning 6-7 6-3 7-6 after two hours and 39 minutes.

Meanwhile, the McCullough twins Caitlin and Annie continued their progress in emphatic fashion in the under-16 girls.

Caitlin wrapped up her match with Chloe Lennox, 6-1 6-0, while Annie defeated Megan Mulgrew 6-0 6-1. Caitlin has also teamed up with Rex Lloyd in the under-18 mixed doubles and they defeated James Smith and Vivienne Bond 6-0 6-2.
