Thornton beaming at Jacobson swoop

Steve Thornton last night completed his defensive unit and then hailed it as ‘the best defence in the league.’

The Belfast Giants coach sealed the signing of former NHL draft pick Michael Jacobsen, who has spent the last three seasons playing in Italy.

And while he will add great strength on the blueline, Jacobsen is also expected to make a contribution at the other end of the ice as the Giants go about mounting a serious challenge for the Elite League title.

“With the addition of Mike to our blue line, we now feel that we have the best defensive unit in the league,” said Thornton.

“The defencemen we have gives us the option of putting one of them up on forward at any time during the season.

“Jacobsen and Shane Johnson both have experience playing up front, so depending on the situation, that gives me options at the back or up front.”
