By Frank Brownlow

Tyrone GAA boss Mickey Harte has officially opened a new £2.3m state-of-the-art community sports facility in Larne.

Northern Ireland captain Gareth McAuley - who has just joined Premier League outfit West Brom - and Larne FC Manager Paul Millar were also special guests at the official opening.

'The Cliff' in Larne offers a full sized, floodlit 3G pitch with adjacent changing rooms, an education/seminar room and an indoor hall.

The facility caters for a range of sports and activities and aims to provide more opportunities for under-represented groups to help boost participation.

Speaking at the opening, Chairman of The Cliff, Bertie Shaw said: "We are delighted to officially open our top class facility.

"I would like to thank Sport Northern Ireland for their considerable support and funding during the development of the project, including a grant of £2.1m.

"We are also grateful to Larne Borough Council who assisted with additional funding of £200,000.

"The Cliff is state-of-the-art and with a wide range of activities for everyone it is open to the whole community."

Sport Northern Ireland Chief Executive Eamonn McCartan said: "Sport NI is delighted and thrilled to be associated with such a flagship project.

"The community has worked tirelessly to deliver a fit for purpose, quality facility and are now concentrating on offering the best of coaching and training programmes for sportsmen and women, while providing opportunities for grass roots participation.

"The Sport NI funded development officer Gary Haveron is helping The Cliff and Sport NI to meet key objectives of providing opportunities for under represented groups to take part in sport and physical activity.

"Sport NI congratulates The Cliff on this huge achievement," he added.

Tyrone's legendary All-Ireland winning manager Harte was joined at the official opening by Mayor of Larne Bobby McKee, the veteran DUP representative.

The opening of the new facility coincides with local man Brendan Rodgers, from Carnlough, guiding Swansea City to the Premier League. For further information tel 028 28 275333.
