Ulster quintet make GB team out for Euro glory

Published 07/04/2016

The Ulster quintet of brothers Peter and Richard Chambers, Alan Campbell, Joel Cassells and Holly Nixon have been named in the GB Rowing Team for next month's European Championships - a huge lift for their hopes of selection for the Rio Olympics.

Campbell - bronze medallist at London 2012 - is in the single scull, while Richard Chambers, returning from a hand injury, will renew his lightweight double scull partnership with Will Fletcher.

Peter Chambers booked a place in the lightweight four, a boat in which he won Olympic silver alongside older brother Richard at London 2012.

World champion Cassells - all four Ulstermen selected are from Coleraine - is in the non Olympic-class lightweight pair with Sam Scrimgeour but could yet switch classes ahead of the Rio Games in August.

Nixon - from Enniskillen - has been selected in the quadruple scull.

The event takes place in Brandenburg, Germany from May 6 to 8.
