Scud shoots them down

Wednesday, 12 March 2008

Tom Scudamore maintained the glorious tradition of his family by being the third generation to ride a winner at the Cheltenham Festival.

Less than an hour after the agony of finishing second in the Champion Hurdle on Osana, he joined his grandfather Michael and father Peter on the roll of honour with victory on An Accordion in the William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase.

Jumping to the lead two out, the David Pipe-trained seven-year-old had Patsy Hall in his slipstream but he negotiated the final fence better.

The 7-1 shot - wearing the colours of Brian Kilpatrick made famous by Festival victor Sabin Du Loir in the 1980s - held New Alco by two and a quarter lengths, with L'Ami a head away third and Patsy Hall fourth.

"It's absolutely phenomenal. It's a great team effort as he hasn't been the most straightforward horse," said Scudamore.

"Jonathan Lower has got him jumping better and it was a wonderful performance. I'm just the lucky man able to ride him.

"I've ridden my first Festival winner a bit quicker than Dad did. I've beaten him by a year or so, so I've beaten him at something."

Pipe added: "He's not the easiest of horses to ride.

"He's still a big baby and was probably one of the least-exposed ones going into the race. Tom gave him a great ride. When he got to the front he idled but when two or three came to him he kept battling."
