Tower to hit the heights at Sandown
Friday, 4 July 2008
Phoenix Tower can make the most of an unremarkable line-up for Sandown's Coral-Eclipse Stakes by providing Henry Cecil with his first Group One winner of the year.
The popular Newmarket trainer has been edged out at the highest level on a number of occasions, not least with Phoenix Tower who was second in both the Lockinge and the Prince Of Wales's Stakes.
There is no Duke Of Marmalade - the four-length winner at Royal Ascot - to worry about here and the Chester House colt should relish the uphill finish at the Esher track.
Phoenix Tower seemed to be doing his best work at the end of the Prince Of Wales's to prove 10 furlongs was not beyond him and he looks the outstanding contender for this prestigious old race.
Cecil should also be on the mark with Ajaan in the Weatherbys VAT Services Stakes, who travelled beautifully in Ascot's Queen Alexandra Stakes before not quite lasting home over two-miles-five-furlongs.
It is possible he may be able to make an impression in Cup races in time so will feel much more at home over this two-mile trip.
