Legend leaves Folsom backers blue

Lyreen Legend boosted the Cheltenham claims of Boston Bob and Monksland as he was rewarded for his consistency with victory in the Boylesports.com Michael Purcell Memorial Novice Hurdle at Thurles.

Dessie Hughes' charge had finished second to that pair in his previous two races and went one better in good style to open his Grade Two account.

Bryan Cooper brought the 3-1 shot to challenge at the final flight and he held too many guns for the evens favourite Folsom Blue, who could not match his turn of foot and was three and a quarter lengths down at the line. Bridgets Pet was just a neck behind in third.

Hughes said: "He met the first two hurdles all wrong and he jumped a bit up in the air for the rest of them, the track probably wouldn't suit him. He's not entered in Cheltenham as he's only five, and will probably go to both Fairyhouse and Punchestown for two-and-a-half-mile novices."
