Low-key National prep for Backstage

Backstage will complete his preparation for the John Smith's Grand National with a second outing in a point-to-point at the weekend.

The nine-year-old won a three-mile event at Kirkistown over two weeks ago and will run in a similar event this Sunday. Gordon Elliott's charge unseated his rider at the 20th fence in the National last year and his last outing over orthodox fences was in the Galway Plate seven months ago.

"He's good and is going for a point-to-point next Sunday and then he'll go for the Grand National," said Elliott.

"He won a point-to-point a couple of weeks ago and everything is on course for the National again so far."

The handicapper has give Backstage 10st 12lb in the National at Aintree on April 9 for which he is generally available at 16-1.
