Mangan’s Flat hunting in Dundalk
The increasingly impressive Jane Mangan is trusted to deliver on the nap selection Dibella in tonight's finale at Dundalk.
With eight winners to her name in the current jumps campaign, the Cork native has already bypassed a combined tally of seven that she accumulated in her first two seasons riding.
To date, her fantastic Galway Festival triumph on Dermot Weld's Midnight Music is her only success on the Flat, but that could change now.
Joanna Morgan has booked the stylish teenager to take 7lb off Dibella's back in this evening's amateur riders' handicap, a move that might prove very shrewd.
The six-year-old mare was last seen on the Flat running well to be beaten less than five lengths in the stamina-sapping November Handicap over two miles.
She ran a similar race in the Leopardstown contest 12 months earlier, when fifth off a mark of 81, down from a career-high 83.
On her debut for Morgan in the most recent edition, Dibella ran off 74, and she has now been dropped to a career-low of 70.
When you factor in how much value Mangan is for her claim, that makes her a hugely attractive option over this more suitable 12-furlong trip.
Cottesloe and Star Of Aragon are feared under their respective top-class pilots, but may not have as much in hand.
Ger Lyons' Machete Mark, short-headed behind Won Diamond last month, is also strongly fancied under Emmet McNamara in what is a weak-looking mile maiden, while Mountrath has bundles of appeal in the following conditions race over the same trip. The six-year-old won twice on the the all-weather in England, and caught the eye when third here on his second start for Maynooth, Co Kildare handler John Geoghegan last month.
Sophies Echo, fourth then and a live contender in tonight's opener, was chinned on the line on its next start, while the fifth home, Dimitar, followed up with a win.
Meanwhile, Barbecue Eddie secured victory in Round One of the Al Maktoum Challenge at Meydan. The Group Two was the feature on the opening evening of the Dubai World Cup Carnival.
