Retirement beckons for Voler

Voler La Vedette is to end her racing career this season and be retired to the paddocks, trainer Colm Murphy has revealed.

The seven-year-old mare, who will not be in action at Cheltenham next week, has won nine of her 16 starts, earning over £209,000 in prize-money.

"You won`t see her next season as she is going to be covered. Unfortunately this is her last season racing," the County Wexford trainer told At The Races.

"She`s a different mare this year. She was like a scalded cat last year but she`s stronger now and has grown up a lot and matured. I think she`s just a bit short of the top class on nice ground. I`m sure she could hold her own in Grade Ones on soft ground, but she`s probably just a notch off the proper Grade Ones.

"She`s a little bit above Grade Two so she`s somewhere in between.

"She deserved to win her Grade Two the last day at Navan as she`d been knocking on the door the whole season.

"Now she has settled I think we can step her up in trip."
