Versatile Critic set Galway double

Dermot Weld is considering running his smart dual-purpose performer Rock Critic both on the Flat and over obstacles at the upcoming Galway Festival.

The eight-year-old won on his hurdling debut at this meeting 12 months ago, his fourth Galway Festival victory having struck twice in 2011 and once in 2010.

He has not been seen in competitive action since winning over timber at Fairyhouse in early February, but could be in for a busy week, with Tuesday's Topaz Mile and the Galway Hurdle a little under 48 hours later both under consideration.

Speaking to, Weld said: "I have far less National Hunt horses now, we've only a handful in training.

"That's by choice. I've enjoyed training National Hunt horses and I'll continue to keep a couple, but that's all.

"Rock Critic is a good, dual-purpose horses. He won his hurdle race first time out there (Galway) last year and he won two handicaps on the Flat the previous year.

"Hopefully he'll feature in either the Topaz Handicap on the Tuesday or the Galway Hurdle, or both. We'll wait and see what the weather does."
