Red-hot Bejenaru looking to ensure a final chapter
Karola Bejenaru will bid to make the final of the under-18 International Tennis Federation competition in Italy today. Bejenaru continued her impressive form in the tournament when she overcame Italian Anna Turati in the last eight yesterday, winning 7-6 6-0.
The east Belfast teenager held her nerve in a tense opening set, edging the tie-break 7-5 before going on to dominate the second.
The Windsor club player now faces a tough clash with Russian Anastasia Potapova and victory would give her a great chance of breaking into the World's top 10 as well as boosting her hopes of competing in qualifying for the French Junior Open.
Meanwhile, Petra Kvitova will take on Svetlana Kuznetsova in the Madrid Open final.
Kuznetsova shocked fellow Russian Maria Sharapova, winning 6-2 6-4. Top seed Serena Williams then slumped to an even bigger upset when she was defeated 6-2 6-3 by Kvitova.
Williams had won all five of their previous meetings but the American looked physically diminished during the loss.
