Russia has escaped a blanket ban from the International Olympic Committee, the BBC has reported.

The move comes following revelations about Russia's doping scandal.

The International Olympic Committee will instead leave it up to individual sport's governing bodies to decide if Russian competitors are clean and should be allowed to take part.

The decision follows a damning report in which Canadian law professor Richard McLaren claimed Russia operated a state-sponsored doping programme from 2011 to 2015.

The 2016 Olympics are due to start in Rio on Friday August 5.
