Ards vets facing tough Cup test away to Ballynahinch

By Staff Reporter

Ards IV have virtually made the McCambley Cup their own with five wins from seven finals in the last decade, but they face a formidable challenge at Ballynahinch VII in the second round on Saturday.

Their squad contains many Ards' faces from the past and it includes a few lads that have tasted success at the highest level of the game, including Andy Matchett and Rab Irwin, who helped Ulster to the European title.

This wily and experienced group have managed to stay together over the years, emphasised by back row Keith McIlwaine who is the 'baby' of the side at 31.

He can transform from being a flying centre to a hard tackling forward.

'Pocket battleship' Geoff Garrett, versatile Gary Dempsey and hooker Andy Fletcher are the likely front row.
