England player ratings

MIKE BROWN: Ran himself into the ground and was exhausted by the end having given everything to the cause. 7/10

ANTHONY WATSON: Unable to make any impact out on the wing in what was often an ugly spectacle. 7

JONATHAN JOSEPH: Fed off scraps and never stopped trying, but this blood and thunder match was not his type of game. 7

OWEN FARRELL: Remarkable performance from the playmaker who was commitment personified and finished with 18 points. 9

JACK NOWELL: Recalled at the expense of the Marland Yarde and his rugged display justified the selection call. 7

GEORGE FORD: Composed, tidy and brave, this was a magnificent day for the Bath fly-half. 8

BEN YOUNGS: His passing may lack snap at times, but he was another of England's stars. 8

MAKO VUNIPOLA: Probably his best performance in an England jersey as he tackled with no regard for his own safety. 9

DYLAN HARTLEY: Scored the opening try and was another colossus in the Red Rose pack. 8

DAN COLE: Showed the fight and desire that England needed if they were to topple the Wallabies. 8

MARO ITOJE: Wrapped up Toby Smith in the second half to deny the Wallabies a certain try at a key stage of the match. 8

GEORGE KRUIS: The Saracens lock was superb as he charged at gold shirts and scattered them from rucks. 8

CHRIS ROBSHAW: Marked his 50th cap with his best performance for England and was deservedly named man of the match. 9

JAMES HASKELL: Hobbled off at the end, utterly spent but knowing he had been heroic in defence. 9

BILLY VUNIPOLA: Invited pressure on to England at one point, but he was close to his bulldozing best. 8

Replacements -

JAMIE GEORGE: Played a role in the decisive try. 7

MATT MULLAN: Little chance to shine. 7

PAUL HILL: Strong and direct. 7

JOE LAUNCHBURY: Made an impact. 7

COURTNEY LAWES: Made an eye-catching break. 7

JACK CLIFFORD: Brought energy and fresh legs. 7

DANNY CARE: Lively and dynamic. 7
