Ballynahinch face Fermanagh in Ulster Grand Final

Friday, 2 July 2010

Rugby League’s Ulster Grand Final takes place tomorrow at Ballymacarn Park, Ballynahinch with a 1.00pm start.

Ballynahinch Rabbitohs host Fermanagh Redskins in the showdown, the finalists having booked their places by virtue of victories in last weekend’s semi-final matches.

The Rabbitohs beat East Belfast Bulldogs 44-28 while the Redskins were 52-44 victors over Stangford Sharks.

With Portadown now fielding a team and a new side emerging in Magherafelt, clearly Rugby League is gaining a summer foothold.

Wayne Kelly, the 13-man code’s Rugby League Development Officer for Ulster/Leinster said: “It’s growing all the time so hopefully there will be a decent crowd for the final.

“Obviously, with the representative programme coming up, the players will want to avoid injuries, but that won’t stop them going all out to win. It’s an Ulster final, after all.”

For Tim Morton, who has been a key figure in Ballynahinch’s emergence, the occasion will be a big occasion.

“Tim has occupied just about every role with the Rabbitohs — founder-member, player, coach and general all-rounder,” Kelly said. “He’s really looking forward to this.”
