Bath have to settle for fifth spot

Bath did all they could to secure an improbable Aviva Premiership play-off spot by scoring four tries before half-time but eventually had to settle for fifth place and Heineken Cup qualification following a 42-12 win over Newcastle.

And it was a few agonising minutes after the final whistle that Newcastle players finally received confirmation that defeat for Leeds against Northampton meant the Falcons had escaped relegation on points difference.

Sam Vesty, Carlos Ignacio Fernandez Lobbe, Matt Carraro, Matt Banahan and Jacques Boussuge touched down for Bath, with Alex Tait and Luke Fielden crossing for the visitors.
