Ornel Gega scored a try in either half as Italy claimed their first win under head coach Conor O'Shea by edging out the United States 24-20 in San Jose.

A converted penalty try and a penalty from AJ MacGinty helped the hosts into a surprise 10-3 lead but Gega crossed and Carlo Canna added a three-pointer on the hooter to give the Azzurri a slender one-point lead at the interval.

Canna then slotted over a drop goal and the conversion to Gega's second try to give Italy, who lost to Argentina in O'Shea's first game in charge last week, some breathing room.

Tony Lamborn's try, with MacGinty adding the extras having earlier knocked in a penalty, narrowed the deficit to a solitary point, but Canna's third penalty at the death ensured the visitors claimed the spoils.
