Dame Mary Peters in tribute to Wales rugby legend Cliff Morgan
WELSH rugby legend Cliff Morgan has been remembered as a sporting hero and true gentleman by his good friend Dame Mary Peters.
The champion Olympic athlete said it was with great sadness she received a call yesterday morning to inform her, her friend, known by his nickname Cliffy, had died.
The 83-year-old, who won 29 caps for Wales and also captained the British and Irish Lions, had been ill for many years.
The broadcaster and former Cardiff player was married to Nuala Martin for 45 years before her sudden death in 1999. He is survived by his two children and his second wife, Pat, who he married in 2001.
Last night, Dame Mary paid tribute to her friend.
"I am devastated that Cliffy is no longer with us," Dame Mary said.
"I have lost a friend but we have all lost one of rugby and sport's greatest heroes who was also a true gentleman."
