Donaghadee 10 - 0 Coleraine
What a year it has been for Donaghadee.
Firstly they gained promotion to the Kukri Qualifying 1 which they presently head by one point although Clogher Valley have two fixtures in hand and now they have clinched the Millar McCall Wylie Junior Cup with a deserved success at a windswept Ravenhill.
They started favourites having just lost one game all season but Coleraine put up a real fight although they failed to take full advantage of the atrocious conditions.
They had the wind in their favour in the first period but their only really scoring chance was a difficult penalty attempt by David Andrews.
They had David Ferguson ‘yellow carded’ after 31 minutes and Paul Roxborough followed four minutes later.
This gave Dee the incentive and opportunity to use their extra strength up front and, following a five metre scrum and some loose play, No 8 Richard Miller crashed over in the corner.
Coleraine raised their performance after the restart and were rewarded with many penalties but could only gain a few yards against the strong wind.
When Dee had flanker Kenny McCombe ‘yellow carded’ the Lodge Road team tried their best to come back into the contest but the opposing defence held firm.
Donaghadee had control for most of the final quarter and, after a number of penalties and scrums around the Coleraine line, a forward surge in the final few minutes led to the second try claimed by Chris Goode.
It was a real team effort by Dee, especially in defence, but special mention must go to McCombe who put in a tremendous amount of work in the first period.
After the game coach Andy Monson was thrilled with the performance, saying: “This was a just reward for the amount of work the boys have put in.
“Many years hard work has started to pay dividends and a large number of people have been involved who deserve a lot of thanks.
“The President, Committee, sponsors, members of the club, the playing staff and the people of Donaghadee have all shown their support and dedication.”
This is another step up for the ambitious Donaghadee whose objective is to join the AIL and the way they are playing they may not have to wait too long.
